Maybe I’m the last one to know this, but have you guys ever realized how easy it is to make your own “ fruit sauce” AKA apple or pear sauce? Holy cow, LIFE CHANGING!! A few months ago I made my own applesauce or the first time and was shocked at how simple it was and how similar it tasted to the store bought stuff. While I’ve been getting apples each week at the farmers market, I had yet to branch out into pears until I was home a couple weekends ago.
My parents have a pear tree in our backyard and when I was home, the pears on the tree were plentiful and ripe—so we had to take advantage and pick as many as we could! As you can imagine, this was an “America’s Funniest Home Videos” type of experience and as much as I love y’all, those candid vids will not be making an appearance. I have to admit, growing up I never really took full advantage of our tree. When I was younger though, I used to catch our dog enjoying a delicious pear that had fallen in our yard every once and while…a good memory for me to think about while I was having near death experiences on the step ladder while picking them. 🙂
My adorable mom. YAY.
We accumulated quite the batch in our short time out there!.
My sweet mother (pictured above) sent me home with practically all of those and knowing I couldn’t devour them all, I decided to try making pear sauce! It’s super simple (esp. if you’ve made applesauce before) and made my apartment smell AMAZING. Follow along below for how I made it!
Easy Crockpot Pear Sauce
Makes approx. 2 cups pear sauce
7-8 medium sized fresh pears
1 cup water
1 tsp. cinnamon
Peel and cut pears into small chunks. Mine were a little on the ripe side, so I had to cut the bad spots out, but was still able to get a good amount!
Place in crockpot, pour water over, and sprinkle cinnamon on top. Cook on low for 2-3 hours. Once pears are soft, you have a couple of options. If you like chunky pear sauce (like me), you can drain part of the water and mash by hand with a potato masher. If you want smoother pear sauce, drain less water (or none of it) and blend in a blender.
Not the best picture, but I accidently ate most of it before I could snap a pic. For storage, it should keep up to a week in the fridge and this is a manageable amount to eat in that amount of time!
Now tell me…have you ever made your own applesauce? Or other fruit sauce?
