As most of you know, this past Monday was a big day for me. D-day, AKA the day where I defended my dissertation. For you grad school newbies, this is when you present everything you’ve done research-wise in grad school to your committee, they ask you a million questions, and then they decide if you can graduate with your Ph.D. or not.
Long story short—I PASSED!!!! And now I am a proud owner of a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Nutritional Sciences. My dissertation research centered around alleviating vitamin A deficiency by varying food sources in different populations. I loved the work I did in grad school, even if I complained about it a lot. 🙂 All in all, I think the defense went well and I as proud of myself. I feel very lucky that I have a very supportive committee of professors that has always had my best interest in mind– I mention this because I know for many poor grad students, this isn’t the case.
Afterwards, I met my friends at the terrace for drinks to celebrate…no surprise there!
Also important besides knowing your research front and back, the outfit that you present that stuff in! 🙂 Here is a terrible picture of my entire outfit I sent out the night before to get final approval from my mom. I had to share because 1) The Limited is AMAZING with their coupons and I got this outfit for about half off and 2) their pencil skirts are the only ones that fit real bodied women, in my opinion!
So, what have I been doing since becoming Dr. Emily? Here’s a taste…
I’m still going into lab. I have a few publications to finish…womp womp. But it’s not so bad, the stress level is WAYYYY less and I’ve been eating delicious scones while I edit those papers.
I’ve been running in the beautiful weather! I love having more time to be active. And who wouldn’t want to run WITH THIS VIEW?!
Annnnd, I’ve been golfing. My new hobby. It’s pretty hilarious.
So what’s next for me?
Short term- going to Europe this summer!
Long term- moving to Minnesota and starting my dream job as a professor! Still hasn’t sunk in that I’m 26 years old, have a Ph.D., and am going to be living out my dream in just a few short months!
So tell me…any other grad school inquires out there? Defense inquiries? Golf advice? 🙂
